Information Security Fundamentals

The rate at which we use computers and the internet has made information security essential for us all. Last week we at Jidaw decided to revisit information security fundamentals through a training session conducted by Richard Mba of Jidaw.

The essence of information security is to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information assets, resources, and systems from unauthorized access, use, misuse, disclosure, destruction, modification, or disruption.

Make no mistake, the threats are everywhere – at home, at work or the field.

Not a Technology Issue

However, emphasis in information security as in other areas of technology is usually in infrastructure, new tools and gadgets. But information security isn´t a technology issue. Without addressing the foundation - the human factor - the train will not leave the station. Study after study continually flags "Human error" as the most identified cause of security breaches.

The African Information Security Association (AISA) was established based on the need to develop information security awareness and capacity in Africa. AISA is member driven organization.

It is created to promote Information security in Africa. Members get involved through events, web content, campaigns against Cybercrime as well as activities that support the development of secure information environments in Africa.

Information for Protection

The information security basics session addressed the appropriate use, protection and security of information, as well as our responsibilities as users. We deploy technology everywhere but how conscious are users about their responsibilities? Ignorance can be costly. And if you know you are vulnerable, what should you do?

do you give up? NO you are continually on the rise
Falling is not the end. Even bruised and knocked down, we rise up by learning what went wrong, self pity is never the answer. Don’t let mistakes intimidate you – nobody is perfect – messing up is still an avenue to learn

do we doubt ourselves? NO we are powerful beyond measure.
Even in the face of rejection, self doubt solves nothing. Situations should not define you. Refuse to be limited like a machine. Instead use challenges to show what you’re made of.
