Advancing the future of Agriculture in Africa -2

IITA Youth Agripreneurs, the future of Agriculture? 2

To promote ICT entrepreneurship in agriculture among the youth, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Youth Agripreneurs group runs an incubator programme, trainings, and establishes ICT entrepreneurial activities itself. The incubator programme equips startups to establish profitable businesses that solve agricultural problems using ICT.
An e-commerce platform has also been setup for the sale of agricultural produce for farmers, buyers and others along the value chain.

Positive
The impression one gets about IITA Youth Agripreneurs (IYA) is that it has been very effective in using e-agriculture to attract youths to agriculture. Developments have been positive. Young people must take centre stage in farming not for just for transforming and growing the agriculture sector but for sustainable development in Africa.

Youth unemployment is one the rise and in view of the terribly low proportion of young people in farming, IYA is a welcome development. The youth and ICT entrepreneurship is angle is quite forward looking. Essentially, this innovative group has shown that using efficient tech and the building of capacity, young people can run agriculture as a business.

Moving Forward
There is however a need to increase the local content in the technologies being adopted to ensure sustainability.

Regular monitoring and evaluation is also essential for such a program making such an impact in agribusiness. This is the only way to know if it is meeting expectations and also if it can meet future needs. For example is what is being done about scaling and replicating successful models? It is expected that performance is evaluated periodically.

It is also important that IYA goes beyond its traditional circles to engage with other stakeholders, especially in tech to widen coverage and deepen impact. Inclusion is critical. Engagement is required beyond the usual circles. Open mindedness and willingness to listen to different ideas are critical in this age.

The Digital: Tools Essential, But Culture matters
IYA has realized the importance of using social media and ICT tool to help in building groups of young professionals in agriculture. Already the group leverages such platforms to share relevant information. Monitoring of trending issues in the sector and greater capacity building are all critical. IYA is also advised to improve the level of awareness on its activities. It should be noted as well that the digital era demands that the use of these tools and infrastructure should go along with a culture of responsiveness and action.

For IYA, Young People are the Answer
There is no doubt that young people are change agents required to revive and grow the sector through modern technologies and innovations. The future of agriculture is the youth. IYA is an encouraging and commendable effort towards sustainable agriculture. It is not only a formidable platform of young AgriTech professionals, but can be a wind of change in the agricultural sector.

Advancing the future of Agriculture in Africa -1

IITA Youth Agripreneurs, the future of Agriculture? 1

Established by International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the IITA Youth Agripreneurs (IYA) is an exciting youth-in-agribusiness initiative. Bringing young graduates from diverse backgrounds together as a group, the initiative encourages young people to embrace the business angle of agriculture and harness the potential of e-agriculture in Nigeria and other parts of Africa.

It is one of the enterprising approaches designed one, to reorient the youth towards productive and profitable engagement in agriculture and two, to encourage and facilitate the use of ICTs in agriculture. Sustainable agriculture in Africa demands the active involvement of the youth. But the perception has always been that farming is a domain for old people. A new generation of farmers will apply tech innovation to various aspects of the agriculture value chain. Initiatives such as IYA are therefore avenues to build the capacity of young people in sustainable agronomic practices, and bring attention to ICT and other entrepreneurship opportunities in agriculture.

A Focus on Youth
IYA builds youth capacity by conducting agribusiness incubations and offering training and mentoring to young people. As a result promising collective enterprises have been created. In stimulating the engagement of youth in agribusinesses, the group connects with rural communities who benefit through employment, out-grower opportunities and income generation.

The IYA ICT unit established its own business system which facilitates the adoption of modern farming methods by farmers. This unit has helped to enhance agriculture outcomes by making use of ICT tools, like drones. Drone delivery services adopt the use of drones to capture aerial pictures, produce video documentation of field activities, monitor crop performance, and perform other research-related functions.

Innovative Practice and Activities
According to reports, IYA trains young agripreneurs in Nigeria on the use of a ‘smart tractor’ - a powerful machine that serves farmers throughout the farm production cycle. Fitted with a GPS antenna, local SIM card, hard drive and telematics capabilities, the Smart Tractor is able to connect to the powerful cloud software of Hello Tractor, even in rural environments with low connectivity. IYA earns income through the provision of support services and the delivery of training to entrepreneurs, farmer organisations, and individual farmers.

The Insider's Guide to Capacity Management

Book Review of A-Z of Capacity Management: Practical Guide for Implementing Enterprise IT Monitoring & Capacity Planning Paperback – November 20, 2017

Practical capacity management in a nutshell is one way to describe this book. Deriving optimal value from tech infrastructure has also been a concern in the enterprise environment. Simple and yet painstakingly written, it is an excellent guide for everyone who needs to get a full grasp of what it takes to plan and implement the capacity management process for organizations.

Throughout the book, it is clear that Dominic has rich expertise in capacity management as the book flows with credible and real life nuggets from his first hand experience. Planning for capacity to meet enterprise needs cannot be underestimated. The balance of focusing on core issues and yet making critical issues easy to understand and simple is one of the things that makes this book so appealing.

Particularly impressive is his detailed attention to capacity management fundamentals, measurement and data, planning model, planning, reporting and auditing of the process. Rather than empty bells and whistles, he uncovers and highlights the substance to ensure readers focus on issues that matter.

The single thread that runs through the book is information and insights that will help readers take quality decisions in the important management of capacity. At the end of the day it is about achieving capacity management goals and adding value.

Full of revelations that should interest anyone with more than a passing interest in the optimum management of infrastructure and computing resources, the aspect relating to the cloud computing and machine learning era, prepares the reader for the ever changing and increasingly digitally enabled world we live in. Indeed it is not just a book for today, but additionally addresses the impact of new technologies and how the future demands on business can be met efficiently and effectively.

IT infrastructure, service delivery, cost/performance balance, business requirements and targets are all within the capacity management realm. As an information technology consultant, I know that many lack the guidance and detail this book provides.

It is welcome, practical and outstanding in how it brings all these important issues together in one place. Rich in content, enjoyable to read, it is a simple yet captivating book!

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in capacity management. 5 stars for an excellent guide!

Closing Infrastructure Gaps in Nigeria

Infrastructure gaps in the Nigerian digital space are hard reality. But opportunities lie within.  However till gaps are closed, we will not be at our best in areas that matter – education, agriculture health, commerce, manufacturing, etc. Very costly!

Opportunities are being missed, while potential wastes away. Voice communication is critical but the issue of concern is the driving force of the knowledge economy - innovation! It is about the foundation for innovation and related opportunities in the tech enabled world.

Fintech, ecommerce, edtech, ehealth and other disruptive areas are all children of innovation. Embracing status quo is more of pretense than impact. Time is ripe for purposeful disruption to reach dreams, to foster inclusion and harness potential. Wasting the young is to waste the country. Brimming with energy and ideas our youth could do with infrastructure bridges to create the new things this country needs, the new that will make us more competitive, the new that could transform the planet. Change reality and connect ideas to reality with infrastructure. I joke not.

Fastest growing market? Rapid teledensity growth? There has been progress, undeniably. But is this sufficient for our needs? I don’t think so. Expand the present vision. For one thing, inclusion and quality still lag ridiculously behind. Branded as the broadband “do-it-all”, the National Broadband Plan (NBP) clearly needs to be reviewed and updated. Policy is again being outrun by the environment.

It's not all about doom though; explosive opportunity is in closing the gap. Policy changes and political will must come into play to ensure the states in Nigeria and FCT get with the program - to be smart and digital. The right thinking at the authority and policy level matters - broadband is not a luxury but a fundamental human right.

Plan for Job Search

As you apply for jobs consider your own ambitions and plans. Jidaw asks: Newcomer what is your plan? Your focus is your career. Big or small organization, local or international, the job is a tool not your final destination. Beginner or experienced professional, everyone needs to have a plan. The job is a vehicle to get you to where you are going. Just any job will do?

Jidaw insists that you must have dreams. Everybody needs a dream. You can’t limit your career to a job. Everybody needs a roadmap; otherwise the dream remains a dream. Planning brings your dreams from the back to the front of the brain. It keeps you coordinated - all your activities fit in and reinforce each other.

Without a career plan how do you search? Or will growth just happen? Lack of experience does not mean lack of ability to plan. Planning provides direction. It is certainly better than jumping on whatever comes along. Rather than shooting aimlessly in the dark make your efforts focused and purposeful. Get your career growth perspectives right and develop an effective career plan. Jidaw advises that it may not appear glamorous but it is meaningful and needed. As grow your career you will appreciate the need to plan.

Applying for the job because of the announcement shouldn’t be the only thing in your mind. How does the job fit into your plan? Is the job is in line with where you are going? It is important in planning that you have ideas not just about how and where to search but also about how jobs will be employed for strategic advantage.

Jidaw recommends the following to make your plan effective:
  • Have ideas that expand your thoughts past the narrow confines of a fresh graduate looking for a job.
  • Make your mental involvement in the job search and career development process big picture and future oriented.
  • There are no dumb ideas. And it isn’t a crime to run out of ideas.

Do Whatever it Takes Get the Job done

Do-whatever-it-takes, Get the job done

Fresh graduate, job searching? Are you doing what you can or doing whatever it takes?  There is a big difference.

You are young, new to the scene. But don’t sell yourself short. Your ability to handle the tough or unexpected can set you apart. Your qualification is essential for graduate positions. However, differentiate yourself by stepping above the degree. Your degree is simply a tool and is no guarantee of what you will do in real life, and how you will react to unexpected situations. You have a degree but forget the book qualification.

An issue comes up with the bank’s servers you are supporting can you move fast, think on your feet and resolve the problem? The answer may not be in any book or classroom. Get past your academic and technical abilities. Why keep yourself in the box when your abilities are actually unlimited? If the pressure is high will you be able to take smart decisions about issues that affect the business in a calm and sound manner? There is a sudden and major change while handling a service request, how well can you read situations and make wise recommendations?

  • There is no substitute for someone who is quick to grasp the dynamics of the work environment and can react appropriately. Always look for opportunities to share experiences with interviewers and employers on how you have resolved tough or unexpected encounters in the past, maybe in school or in public.
  • But stepping up to carry the weight and show initiative is not a reflex action for many. A major disturbing issue in the job search arena is the dearth of people who think and act like solution providers – most prefer to highlight rather than address problems. “Someone else will solve the problem.” Sometimes challenges could spring from changes in the IT world, system faults, dealing with organizational issues, unfriendly clients or uncooperative colleagues.
  • Stand out by showing that you have the mental edge and desire to solve problems– you don’t have experience but you can think, resolve issues and make things happen despite the presence of obstacles. With or without experience, those with real desire give birth to positive action. The work environment is reality not an excuse for incompetence. Employers don’t want to be reduced to nannies or babysitters.
  • In the interview do you show that you are dependable, or do you come across as a baby holding tight to toys in a pram? Want the fresh graduate job? Lack of desire is not a selling point. Where is your hunger? Just doing the routine, doing what you can? Where is your sense of urgency?
Your qualification means nothing to the employer without the relentless determination of an intense do-whatever-it-takes attitude. Grow up and take charge.
HAVE YOUR SAY: Do you agree with the do-whatever-it-takes approach? Please share your thoughts and opinions.
